Going on the road for their second district game, the Grapeland Sandies fended off Slocum and came away with a 63-51 victory to stay unbeaten in 20-2A hoops action.
Slocum kept Grapeland close in the first quarter, holding the TABC No. 17-ranked Sandies to a 13-10 lead.
The Mustangs were silenced in the second quarter, however, as Grapeland reeled off a 16 to 0 run to open up a 29-10 halftime lead.
Slocum was able to whittle Grapeland's lead down to five late in the third quarter. Tink McQuirter drained a 3-pointer to put the Sandies up by 20 with 5:56 on the clock, but left the game with an injury at the 4:15 mark. During his absence Slocum was able to put together a 19 to 4 run that made the score 36-31 with 2:40 left.
McQuirter returned with 2:37 left and the Sandies closed out the third with a 6 to 2 run that gave them a 42-33 cushion heading into the final frame.
Parker Wilson buried five treys and finished with 21 points. Wilson also contributed with 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
Jaques Faulk was right behind with 20 points, including three treys and 7-of-8 free throw shooting. He was also credited with 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 1 block.
Jason Walker booked 6 points, while McQuirter (1 trey), Riley Chipman, Rodney Davis and Dee Bass all chipped in 4 apiece.
Davis was also credited with 7 rebounds and 1 steal. Chipman booked 6 rebounds and 4 assists, while McQuirter had 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Bass had 3 rebounds and Walker had 2 boards.
The Sandies hosted Groveton on Friday and will host Latexo on Tuesday night.
