Taking on a class 4A squad, the Grapeland Sandies upended the Coldspring Trojans 76-62 to capture third place in the finals of the Houston County Holiday Tournament Wednesday night at The Hop.
The Sandies finished second in their pool with a 3-1 record, losing only to eventual tourney champion Fairfield. Grapeland posted pool wins over 3A Trinity (80-66), 3A Onalaska (50-34) and 2A Bremond (71-29) before falling to class 4A Fairfield 76-63.
Against Coldspring, the Sandies came out smoking and grabbed a 16-4 lead with an early spurt that included four treys-- a game opener by Parker Wilson, a trey by Jaques Faulk and back to back buckets from beyond the arc by Tink McQuirter.
The Trojans whittled Grapeland's lead down to 19-15 at the end of the quarter and then tied the game at 27-all with 3:00 left in the second.
Seven unanswered point gave the Sandies a seven-point lead, but the Trojans closed the gap on three free throws and a bucket to make it a two-point game.
But two free throws by Wilson gave the Sandies a 36-32 edge heading into halftime.
After play resumed in the second half, Rodney Davis energized the Sandies with a one-handed dunk that ignited 9 to 0 run that put Grapeland up 45-32.
A 3-pointer by Faulk gave the Sandies a 14-point lead with 4:10 to go in the third. The Trojans cut the lead back to nine but the Sandies carried a 58-47 lead into the final period.
Grapeland opened up a 14-point lead with 5:00 left only to see their lead dwindle to five, 67-62 with 3:14 left after a 10-1 run by Coldspring.
The Sandies put the game away with a 9 to 0 run that included a trey and bucket by McQuirter, a basket by Faulk and a layup by Davis with :30 left.
All-Tournament honorees Tink McQuirter and Jaques Faulk led five Sandies in double figures.
McQuirter rained in five 3-pointers in ringing up his 20 points. Faulk buried three shots from beyond the arc to finish with 17.
Riley Chipman booked 14 points (2 treys), Rodney Davis followed with 13 and Parker Wilson rounded out double figures with 11 (3 treys). Jason Walker chipped in 3.

Grapeland 71, Bremond 29
The Sandies took control early and led 18-3 after a quarter, 41-12 at the break and 58-18 at the end of three quarters.
McQuirter led in double figures with 19 (1 trey), while Chipman, Wilson (2 treys) and Davis (2 treys) all finished with 10 apiece.
Jason Walker knocked down a 3-pointer and tallied 8 while Richard Brock picked up 6 points with a pair of treys.
Faulk and Dontavian Bass each drained a trey and rounded out the scoring with 4 apiece.
Fairfield 76, Grapeland 63
After a 15-15 first quarter deadlock, Fairfield pulled away 36-28 at intermission and 52-41 at the end of three.
Faulk, who missed Monday's pool games recuperating from a minor injury, poured in 23 points. He sank three 3-pointers and was 6 of 7 at the foul line.
McQuirter finished with 14, including three treys and 5-of-6 free throw shooting. Also scoring were Wilson with 9, Davis 7, Walker 5, and Chipman 5.
