Bulldogs Open Season With Loss To Alto

ALTO-- Led by highly touted quarterback Keenen Johnson, the Alto Yellow Jackets dug their stingers into the visiting Crockett Bulldogs, 60-33, Friday night.

Johnson scored seven touchdowns and piled up over 350 yards rushing as Alto led 27-6 at halftime and 40-20 heading into the final period.

Alto received the opening kickoff and scored on its first offensive play when Johnson bolted 74 yards.

After Alto forced a Bulldog punt, Johnson scored on a 24-yard run and kicker Gonzolo Argulin nailed both extra points for a 14-0 lead with 7:35 left in the first.

Crockett finally scored on a crucial fourth-down play when quarterback Case Robinson connected with Lucky Daniels for a 30-yard touchdown strike with 3:43 left in the first.

Alto was forced to punt for the first time, but got the ball back when a Jacket defender intercepted a tipped pass and returned it to the Bulldog 15. Johnson scored from 11 yards out on the first play of the second quarter to give Alto a 20-6 edge.

A 1-yard blast by Nick Pope extended Alto's lead to 26-7 with 7:32 in the second.

The Bulldogs threatened to close the gap late in the first half when they drove to the Alto 11 yard line before the Jackets mounted a defensive stand.

Crockett received the second half kickoff and quickly scored just three plays later. After De'Anthony Epps ran for seven yards on the first play, Robinson escaped trouble and found Daniels on a 28-yard gain. Epps again got the call and burst up the middle for a 41-yard touchdown scamper.

Epps then ran in the two-point conversion, cutting the lead to 27-14 with 11:04 in the third.

Alto quickly matched the score with a 60-yard drive that Johnson capped on a leaping one-yard plunge into the end zone.
The Bulldogs continued to battle back, however. Setting up shop at their own 27 after the kickoff, Epps took the handoff from Robinson and blazed 73 yards down the right side for a quick touchdown that trimmed the lead to 34-20 with 5:27 left in the third.

A 10-yard run by Johnson late in the third quarter put Alto up 46-20, but the Bulldogs blocked the extra point kick.
Early in the fourth, Pope scored from five yards out and Alto tacked on the extra point to lead 47-20 with 7:11 left.
After the kickoff, Robinson again connected with Daniels on a 66-yard scoring play with 6:54 left.

Alto widened the gap with a 41-yard touchdown run by Johnson.

The Bulldogs' final touchdown came with 4:21 left when AJ Phillips scooted 60 yards to paydirt. Kicker Ricardo Ramirez nailed the extra point.

Johnson's final trip to the end zone-- a 35-yard run-- came with 1:30 left.

The Bulldogs make their home debut on Friday, Sept.4 against the Rusk Eagles.
