At a regular meeting Tuesday, Aug 23, the Houston County Commissioners Court went ahead and voted to raise the county's effective tax rate two cents (from 50.4 cents per $100 assessed valuation this fiscal year to 52.4 cents per $100 of assessed valuation for the upcoming 2016-2017 fiscal year).

The two cents increase was one of three options and the middle ground proposal County Judge Erin Ford – with assistance from County Auditor Melissa Mosley – presented to the county commissioners during three budget workshops this month.

Precinct 2 Commissioner Willie Kitchen offered the motion to approve the rate increase and it was seconded by Precinct 4 Commissioner Kennon Kellum, before passing on a unanimous vote of the four commissioners.
