Two individuals reportedly were stabbed during an early morning altercation in Crockett on New Year's Day.
According to Sgt. Clayton Smith, Public Information Officer for the Crockett Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Cottonwood St. near the Hy-Top Club in reference to a large crowd fighting.
"The caller also advised that someone had a gun and shots were being fired from inside the crowd of people," Smith stated. "Officers arrived on scene and began to disperse the crowd. During this time officers were directed to an assault victim."
When the officers made contact with a male subject, Smith stated, they discovered that he had three stab wounds to his side and back.
Officers assisted the victim until ETMC-EMS arrived on scene.
During the investigation Cedrick Benloss of Crockett was identified as the suspect, according to Smith's statement.
"Approximately 10 minutes later another subject arrived at the ETMC-ER with a stab wound to the right hand," Smith reported. "It was determined that the subject was cut during the same altercation as stated above. Both victims were transferred to another medical facility to receive care for their injuries."
CPD detectives interviewed witnesses from the incident and later issued an arrest warrant charging Benloss with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, which is a second degree felony.
On Thursday, Jan. 1, Benloss was arrested on that warrant and transported to the Houston County Jail where he was booked and confined.
